It takes courage to face the reality of closing a church, but the members of St. Philip’s weren’t ready to do so without leaving an impact. With the support of LHKW, St. Philip’s sold its property to Anishnabeg Outreach, which is the first organization in the KW area to provide a hub of services to the indigenous community through employment, youth support and wellness services. LHKW helped St. Philip’s find a buyer who could provide much-needed community services and also successfully thwarted a developer’s potential flipping of the property.
But that’s not the end of the story. There is a new beginning. It took place through the merger of St. Philip’s with St. Luke’s Lutheran in Kitchener. The long-term sustainability of both congregations has been enhanced by combining the strength of their people and financial resources.
