World Refugee Day

Community Coalition on Refugee and Immigrant Concerns (CCORIC) invites EVERYONE to join the Community-wide observation of World Refugee Day in KW

World Refugee Day: Designated by United Nations, June 20th is celebrated globally to recognize the courage and strength of refugees, and to honour their contributions to their local communities.

Kitchener-Waterloo World Refugee Day 2014: A broad range of community organizations as well as local museums, school boards and libraries have come together to celebrate our Region’s rich history of offering refuge to people fleeing their home countries due to war, conflict, religious persecution or economic hardships -in the distant past as well as more recently.  This year’s local theme is “No one Chooses to be a Refugee”.

There are a number of FREE, FAMILY FRIENDLY events and activities planned in KW throughout the month of June, hosted and sponsored by various partners. CCORIC will host the WRD Launch Ceremony at THEMUSEUM on June 1 from 2 to 4 pm with Gloria Nafziger, Amnesty International Canada’s Refugee Coordinator.   THE MUSEUM will hold a month-long art exhibit on the theme of “No one Chooses to be a Refugee” from June 1 to June 27th. Participating Public and Catholic schools will hold special events / activities to mark World Refugee Day.  Waterloo Region Museum, WRDSB, WDCSB, and YMCA School Settlement Program are hosting a special youth-focused event titled “This is my Story: Voices of local youth refugees” on June 20th.  KPL and WPL, in partnership with KW Multicultural Centre will hold a WRD Film and Speaker Series.  Mennonite Coalition for Refugee Support, in partnership with Mennonite Central Committee, Reception House Waterloo Region, KW Multicultural Centre and Welcome Home Refugee Housing Community, is organizing a walk titled “Walk with Refugees for a Stronger Canada” on June 21st.  For a complete list of events and activities, please visit our website www.worldrefugeedaykw.ca
