The Thistle and the Lotus: Audacious Theologies
from the Wayside

Speaker: Mary ("Joy") Philip
Mary ("Joy") Philip was born in Saudi Arabia and raised in
Kerala, India. She was a professor of zoology, before coming to
the United States. She holds a PhD in systematic theology from
the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. Her dissertation,
"Can Humanization Be Salvation?" explores what being human
and salvation mean for those living in contexts that are
oppressive and inhuman. Currently she lives in Lanark, Illinois,
where she is actively engaged in the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America candidacy committee and in diversity and
racial justice issues.
