I think its FIRST a social deisre. I have a handful of students who participate regularly with us (small group, events, missions.) But are also connected to other groups mainly because they are following their social networks/connections around.SECOND I think a felt-need and/or consumer mentality is the other reason. I get fed here or This is where I find fellowship or I like their missions option better .We live in an age of options. I think we are only going to see more of this.

What about middle aged and older couples/families that were active and involved as long as their kids were in Sunday School and Confirmation but stop coming once their kids are confirmed?

I would like to share this on my facebook; in addition, I am a BIG supporter of bringing our youth back to the church, or at least helping them decide that if they don't want to stay they have a CLEAR understanding of what they are leaving. At St. Stephen's (Kitchener) we are putting together a youth program that is trying to do this. We also feel that youth around the region have to meet each other more regularly to share their faith with others. Last year I asked my Sunday school class of 'big kid' (ages 11-14ish) how many of them keep it a secret that they go to church regularly...every one said that most, if not all of their friends had no idea. This puts so much pressure on them, and once they become full blown teenagers and their peer group takes importance over all, if they do not have peer ties in the church, we may lose them permenantly. We live in a world where the majority of people believe in some kind of higher power, yet all churches are still losing our youth...I am 41 and considered young in our congregation, as most of my generation does not attend church. Best case scenario is sending their children to church with the grandparents.
Sorry this is so long winded, but it refreshing to see someone writing about something so important to me.

I know I'm late to the party on this one, but I do really apctipeare the question (and answers!).I think Lee's right we may see a lot more of this. But my best response might simply be, Why wouldn't they? It's easy to assign problematic motives to students, but in a large number of cases, have we given them much reason to believe that participation means much? It's easy from OUR standpoint to see each ministry as a very different organization. But if I place myself in the shoes of the average Christian student I might view ministries like I view Christian books or any other spiritual aids. And in that case, it could be very wise to pick-and-choose.I think it's our job to reframe the situation or, more accurately, to frame it in the first place. These students have generally not heard about participating in A college ministry from their youth pastors or parents, let alone plugging in well.Yes, once we frame it, students will still struggle with commitment, consumerism, and complacency. But first, I'm not sure many have felt _community_ enough to limit their involvement. We'd like to assume it's truly spiritually valuable for students to invest deeply rather than roam widely but from a discipleship standpoint, I don't know that we should assume that's automatically true. Perhaps that's a good point for evaluation: Will students actually benefit by participating deeply in our group MORE than they would by choosing 3 best activities each week among all the groups? You can probably tell I'm thinking-as-I-go on this one. Great question. Thanks for asking it.

#22 -Can you give some details about what you mean by fire quklicy ? This could mean that if a person makes a mistake, you are quick to terminate them. It seems like such a strategy would leave people in fear for their jobs constantly.I assume you mean that after prayer you realize that a person is not going to work out in a position, you fire them quklicy instead of just keeping them around. (I certainly agree with not keeping useless dinosaurs around). What about moving people to other positions within the church?
